In an interview with Jason Ronald Microsoft we wanted to know if games must meet certain conditions in order to get this designation
In connection with the Xbox Series X, the term "Smart Delivery" is used again and again. Games with this name appear cross-platform on Xbox One and include the other version for free. So if someone buys the Xbox One version of the corresponding game, they can later download an optimized version for this system at no additional cost if they upgrade to the Series X hardware. The reverse also works.
However, we wondered if smart delivery games had to meet certain conditions for these terms. For example, does an optimized Series X version of a title have to deliver at least 4K resolution and 60 frames per second in order to earn this "branding"?
No guidelines, rather encouragement
We were able to speak to Jason Ronald from Microsoft in advance of the Inside Xbox edition in May 2020 and asked him about this very topic. And he had a pretty clear answer in the conversation:
"We want to give developers more power to make decisions, not to dictate what our conditions are. We developed the system with a 'developer-first' mentality in mind"
At least sounds like the developers are quite free in their adjustments, even if Ronald adds:
"There are of course a few technical details, such as how the corresponding version is delivered and should appear in our respective online stores"
New features in older games
"The Coalition, which Gears 5 developed, already wanted to include features in the version for the last generation, but for which they did not have the necessary processor power. They are now able to do this"
These statements underscore the assumption that some developers could use the new possibilities to go back to their "old" titles in order to pimp them up again in certain areas.
